  • How long is the Rising Leaders Mentoring Program?
    • The RLMP is a six-month program. The upcoming program will run from March – August 2017.
  • Can I stay in contact with my mentor after the 6-month program?
    • Yes! We encourage our participants to have long term mentoring relationships.
  • What is the expected time commitment for mentees?
    • The amount of time that mentors and mentees spend together varies. However, we encourage our mentors and mentees to meet once a week.
  • Do I have to have a disability to participate as a mentee?
    • Yes. The USBLN is a cross-disability organization that promotes opportunities for people with all types of disabilities.
  • If I already have a mentor, can I still participate in the RLMP?
    • Yes. It is beneficial to have multiply mentors throughout your career, and the RLMP can connect you with a mentor who has knowledge about working for a business.
  • Is there a financial commitment to being a mentor?
    • No.
  • Will I be matched with a mentor who lives in my city?
    • We try to match mentors and mentees who live in the same city in order to promote in person meetings and job shadowing opportunities. However, since our mentors live across the country it is possible you will be matched with a mentor who lives in a different city.
  • What are the benefits in participating in the RLMP?
    • Participating in the RLMP is a great opportunity to enhance your professional development skills and connect with a mentor that will work with you in pursuing your career aspirations. Mentorship is guidance on figuring out what you want to do for employment, applying for positions, getting through the interview phase, insight on negotiating benefits and compensation, and inside scoops on upcoming leadership and employment opportunities. Mentorship does include reviewing resumes and elevator speeches, but it is also about connecting with someone who will teach you the unique challenges and opportunities that come with working for a business.
  • Will I get a job by participating in the Rising Leaders Mentoring Program?
    • The RLMP is not an employment program. Rather, this program enhances mentees professional development so that they are more equipped to transition into employment and work in a business setting. However, RLMP mentees do receive direct connections to USBLN business partners, exclusive job opening information. RLMP mentee participants have an average employment rate of 86%.
  • Will I be able to connect to other students with disabilities in this program?
    • Yes. We conduct virtual events and meetings so that all student participants can connect. And occasionally, the USBLN hosts local events when multiple students live in the same area.
